Negative Keywords List For Adwords Saves Advertisers Mounds Of Money
There are a lot of people that are advertising using Google Adwords and not using negative keyword lists. This is a huge “no-no.” Save yourself a ton of money and learn how to build negatives into your keyword lists today. So what is a negatives list? The short answer is a keyword in your adwords campaign that has a dash in front of it. An example if you’re selling baseball’s might be (watching the World Series couldn’t help it):
Baseballs (adgroup)
[Purchase baseballs]
[Buy baseballs] <—– KEYWORD S YOU ARE TARGETING
[How to buy baseballs]
_____________________
-Basketballs
-Softballs <—- NEGATIVES LIST
-Soccer balls
In the example above I have all of the keyword that I am targeting in exact match, you can tell because there are brackets [ ] around each of the keywords. I’m not going to get into all of the different match types here, but it is very important to decide if you’re going to use exact with the [ ], phrase with ” “, or broad match which doesn’t have anything but the plain old keyword (I will cover all of that in another post!).
So, back to negatives. When you look at the negatives keyword list you will see all of the words look like this… -example keyword. All you have to do is put a dash in front of any keywords that you DO NOT want your add to show up on when it is typed into the search box. Think of your negatives list like a filter. What you want to do is filter out all of the bad traffic. What I mean is, if someone is typing in “how to buy softballs” the last think I want to do is to have my PPC ad show up on that search query. Why? Easy, because you don’t have what they are looking for and it’s going to cost you a lot of money.
There is one universal negative keyword for people that are out there selling something that actually costs money…the word is Free. There is no reason to allow your ad to show up when someone has the word free in their search query. So do yourself a favor and add –free to your keyword list.
When you build out your negatives lists in your Google Adwords campaigns you will see much higher quality traffic at your site which will result in lower cost sales. Trust me you don’t want to cut this corner because if you do, you’ll feel it DEEP in your pockets. For the record there is not limit to the number of negaitve keywords you can use in your pay per click campaigns. I work with one of the top Google Pay Per Click trainers and she has been known to build negative keyword lists into the thousands. So, if you see a word that you know is not relevant to what you’re offering or selling be sure to add it to your negative keyword list.
